Cutting out dairy can feel like stepping into a whole new world, but don’t worry – we’ve got your back!
There are so many amazing dairy-free alternatives out there now that, while not the same, they will help you create new favorites and enjoy food again. Whether you’re looking for a butter replacement, craving some ice cream, or in need of a dairy-free cheese to melt on your pizza, there are plenty of options to explore.
It’s Okay to Feel Overwhelmed
That said, it’s completely okay to feel a little sad or even overwhelmed at first. Losing out on your favorite milk-based foods can feel like a big deal, and it’s perfectly normal to grieve that loss. We’ve been there! But trust us, once you find some solid alternatives, it gets easier, and soon enough, you’ll be whipping up dairy-free meals and treats that are just as satisfying as the originals.
Always Check Labels
Here’s the thing: ingredients and recipes can change faster than you can say “plant-based,” so checking labels is an absolute must. Every. Single. Time. What works for us might not be right for everyone, so make sure to trust your gut (pun intended) and choose products that you feel good about. If you’re new to label reading, check out this helpful guide on how to interpret food labels.
Explore New Dairy-Free Alternatives
And guess what? New dairy-free alternatives are hitting the shelves constantly, which means you get to experiment and find your own favorites. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our top picks that have worked for us so far. Think of this as a starting point on your dairy-free adventure – who knows what delicious options you’ll discover next!
Milk
There are so many milk alternatives on the market, made from a huge variety of sources, which makes it easy to find something that works for your allergies, taste preferences, or even your specific baking and cooking needs.
Whether you’re making smoothies, using it in recipes, or just enjoying a glass of milk, there’s a dairy-free option out there for you.
Califia Unsweetened Coconut Milk
This coconut milk is light, refreshing, and great for smoothies or baking. We love using the unsweetened version to cut down on added sugars or control the level of sweetness when cooking. We use the other versions, as well, but enjoy the toasted coconut most when not used in cooking.
Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk
This almond milk is a go-to for everything from cereal to coffee. The unsweetened version keeps the sugar content low, but we occasionally enjoy a vanilla-flavored variety for drinking it straight.
Butter
Butter is one of the most commonly used ingredients in the kitchen, from cooking to baking to spreading on your morning toast. It’s also one of the most overlooked sources of dairy for those with allergies or sensitivities. Many people don’t realize that butter contains milk, making it a must-replace item when switching to a dairy-free life. Luckily, there are some fantastic dairy-free alternatives that make this transition easier!
Here are a few of our go-to dairy-free alternatives for butter:
Earth Balance Buttery Spread
Great for spreading on toast, pancakes, or muffins, this tub of buttery goodness is smooth, easy to spread, good for baking, and a great everyday option.
Earth Balance Baking Sticks
Just like the spread, but the stick form makes it ideal for baking. These sticks work as a direct replacement for traditional butter in recipes like cakes, cookies, and pastries.
Miyoko’s Plant Milk Butter
This cultured butter has a richer, more developed flavor, which makes it perfect for those who miss that authentic buttery taste.
Cheese
We are constantly experimenting with dairy-free cheeses, and these are just a tiny fraction of the ones we use and love. Each offers a unique flavor and texture, making it easy to enjoy your favorite cheesy dishes without the dairy. We know they aren’t the same as the real thing, but they are worth the try!
Violife Just Like Cheddar Shreds
Containing coconut and corn, these cheddar shreds are a go-to in our house. We sprinkle them on everything from tacos and omelets. It’s also Ryder’s preferred option for melting on pizza.
Miyoko’s Creamery Pourable Plant Milk Mozzarella
This cashew-based mozzarella is hands-down the best for pizza. It melts beautifully and works great in baked ziti, casseroles, and our Moussaka recipe.
Violife Just Like Feta
Made with coconut, this feta tastes delicious in Greek salads with a tangy flavor and crumbly texture. Ryder always asks for extra!
Violife Just Like Parmesan Wedge
Primarily made from coconut, this parmesan adds a kick of umami zing. We shave it over salads, pastas, and use it in every way parmesan would normally be used.
Kite Hill Ricotta
This product is very similar in texture to dairy ricotta and works well as a layer in lasagna, baked into casseroles, and can even be used to make dairy-free cannolis.
Yogurt
Yogurt is a great option for breakfast, snacks, or adding silky texture to smoothies, and there are plenty of delicious dairy-free alternatives available. Here are a few of our favorites:
So Delicious Coconut Yogurt
The Key Lime flavor is a favorite in our house, especially when Grandma sprinkles some Enjoy Life chocolate chips on top! We also use the unsweetened version for smoothies.
Dairy Free Oui by Yoplait Coconut Yogurt
This yogurt comes in reusable glass jars, which we love, and offers a smooth, creamy texture. Make sure to get the dairy-free version with the teal cap.
Cocoyo Living Coconut Yogurt
Ashley’s favorite, this tangy yogurt only has 2g of sugar per serving which is much less than most other options, making it a healthier indulgence.
Ice Cream
There has been an explosion of dairy-free ice cream recently, and we can’t wait to try more! So far, our favorites are:
Nada Moo Ice Cream
Creamy and rich, this coconut-based ice cream comes in a variety of delicious flavors. We don’t know how they did it, but the texture is as close as we’ve found to dairy ice cream.
So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream
This coconut-based ice cream brand has so much flavor. Their Salted Caramel Cluster is a must-try. They also make ice cream on a popsicle stick for an on-the-go treat. Their ice cream is a little less smooth and creamy, but still delicious.
Sour Cream
Sour cream is a staple in many kitchens, commonly used for topping tacos, baked potatoes, and chili or adding creaminess to dips, dressings, and sauces. For those transitioning to a dairy-free life, finding a dairy-free alternative to sour cream is crucial for keeping those dishes just as delicious and satisfying.
Violife Just Like Sour Cream
Made with coconut, this smooth, tangy option is a perfect substitute for traditional sour cream, offering a creamy texture that works well in a variety of dishes. This is the sour cream of choice for loaded baked potatoes.
Forager Project Dairy-Free Sour Cream
Made from a blend of coconut and cashews, this option has a rich, velvety texture that’s great for salad dressings and sour-cream based sauces. We use it when we make tzatziki sauce.
Kite Hill Dairy-Free Sour Cream
This thick, creamy sour cream alternative is made with almond milk and coconut, offering a subtle tang that’s perfect for dips or dolloping on your favorite dishes.
Cream Cheese
Whether you’re spreading it on a bagel, using it in dips, or making a cheesecake, cream cheese is a must-have. Here are two dairy-free alternatives that we love:
Violife Just Like Original Cream Cheese
Made with coconut, this spreadable cream cheese has a neutral flavor and a smooth, creamy texture, making it great for both sweet and savory dishes.
Kite Hill Cream Cheese
Made from almond milk, this cream cheese has a slightly tangy flavor and a rich, creamy consistency that works well for spreading, or in recipes like vegan cheesecakes and frosting.
Whipped Cream
Whipped cream is a favorite for topping desserts, hot beverages, and adding that light, fluffy touch to pies. If you’re looking for a dairy-free alternative, here are our favorites:
Reddi-wip Non-Dairy Almond or Coconut Whipped Cream
Both of these come in a spray can and are light, airy, and perfect for topping hot drinks like cocoa or coffee.
So Delicious Dairy Free Coco Whip Coconut Whipped Topping
This comes in a tub and is a bit thicker and creamier than the Reddi-wip options, making it great for desserts like pies or fruit bowls.
Coffee Creamers
For those of us who love a good cup of coffee with a little something extra, here are our top dairy-free coffee creamers:
Califia Farms French Vanilla Coffee Creamer
Made with almonds, this creamer is smooth, flavorful, and perfect for adding that touch of vanilla sweetness to your morning cup.
